Harold SMITH

SMITH, Harold W. “Howie” -74, of Pictou, passed away suddenly on July 3, 2012. Born in 1938 in Springville, N.S. he was a son of the late Fielding and Anne (Naugler) Smith. Harold moved to Pictou as a child and spent his adult years in Truro and Lower Sackville, returning to Pictou 10 years ago when he was reunited with his childhood sweetheart, Sybil Bourgeois (Clarke). Harold began his working career with Atlantic Wholesalers followed by The Moore Corporation of Canada and then started his own business, Jan Mark which he successfully ran for 17 years before selling and retiring. He loved family and was happiest when surrounded by friends and family alike, talking and laughing, and always enjoying a good meal. He also enjoyed many days on the golf course and spent years singing with a male quartet in Truro and in later years with The Triniterians and the Stellarton Male Chorus. Harold is survived by his wife, Sybil; son, Richard (Nancy Evans), Middle Sackville; daughter, Kim (Peter Van Dyk), West Caledonia; brother, Fred (Bonnie) Plymouth; sisters, Freda (Glen Cowan), Crystal (John Emmerson) both of Moncton and Audrey Cann, Dartmouth; grandchildren, Nicolas, Nichole and Jacob Van Dyk; step-daughters, Michele Bourgeois (Don Foster), Dartmouth and Carla (Allister Livingstone), Bedford; step-grandchildren, Sarah and Neil Livingstone. Besides his parents, Harold was predeceased by brother, Donald; sister, Vera and nephew, Fred. Visitation will be held in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou Saturday, July 7, from 2:00 - 4:00 and 6:00 - 8:00 PM. Funeral service will take place 2:00 PM Sunday, July 8 from First Presbyterian Church, Pictou. Many thanks to Dr. Ghanem and the VON who provided wonderful care to Harold; brother-in-law, Gordon Clarke and neighbour, Darcy Rafuse for all of their help and support, and to special nephew, Clarence MacDonald who became Harold and Sybil’s lifeline this past year. Family flowers only. Donations in Harold’s memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetic Association, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or charity of your choice.
