Date de décès : 3 janvier 2010
With heavy hearts we announce the death of our dear mother, Kathleen Ann (Beaton) MacNeil on Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, at An Cala Palliative Care Unit, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Nana Kate passed away peacefully with her family by her side after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Born in Halifax, Oct. 21, 1945, she lived in Digby County until the age of six and moved to New Waterford in 1952.
Mom attended Mount Carmel school and trained as a nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in Glace Bay, graduating in 1967. She worked throughout the province at the Grace Maternity Hospital, New Waterford OR, Glace Bay OBS, the Cape Breton Hospital and lastly at Addiction Services in Sydney.
Mom took her illnesses in stride and never complained or let them interfere with her activities or get her down. She volunteered her time with the Breast Cancer Recovery Program — visiting and encouraging breast cancer survivors and with the Alanon support line.
Regardless of the weather, she could always be found bright and early each day at the track for her 5 km walk.
Mom loved doing whatever she could to help others, spending time with her grandchildren, bargain hunting, skating and dancing. She and Hank were regulars at the Saturday night dances — going anywhere their favourite band, In the Mood, played. Her witty personality and great sense of humour will be missed by everyone who knew her.
Kay is survived by her three children, Carol Ann MacNeil Rolls (Derek), Halifax, Sandra MacNeil, Sydney, Jeffrey MacNeil (Suzanne), East Bay; the father of her children and loving friend, Sandy MacNeil, Sydney; three grandchildren, Olivia and Alex, Halifax, and Dylan, East Bay; sister, Marguerite Drohan, Sydney; brothers, Alan (Buddy) Beaton, Sydney, Bernie Beaton, Toronto; special aunt, Kaye Purcell, Ottawa; foster sister and friend, Grace Thibodeau, Digby; together with many loved nieces, nephews and treasured friends. You all know how special you were to mom.
Along with her parents, Catherine (MacDonald) and Johnny Beaton, she was predeceased by her brothers, Gerard and Collie Beaton, half-brother, James Hughs, half-sister, Glenna Stephens and loving companion, Hank Whalen.
Mom found peace and comfort at An Cala and the support and compassion shown by all staff will never be forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, mom has requested a donation to An Cala Palliative Care Unit, Cape Breton Regional Hospital or a charity of your choice.
Visitation will take place Thursday, Jan. 7 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 8, 2009, at the funeral home chapel with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. A remembrance celebration of Mom’s life will follow.
