PORTER, Arnold Thomas – It is with much sadness that the family of Arnold Thomas Porter announce his passing at home on July 6, 2012. Born July 29, 1926 in Yarmouth, he was just days away from his 86th birthday. Arnold was a 4th degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus Council 2181 and a member of the Yarmouth Garden Club. He was known for his sense of humor and enjoyed nothing more than playing with little children and holding babies. He was known as Dad or Grampy by a large extended family. Many people enjoyed his Sunday dinners, which were open to everyone. Arnold worked in the retail business most of his life and made many friends while working at the IGA in Antigonish, Foodland and the NSLC in Yarmouth. Left to grieve are sons, David (Anne-Marie), Yarmouth; Ron, Winnipeg; daughters, Alice (Greg) Melanson, Arcadia; Brenda (Bill) Coffrin, Wedgeport; Helen Porter (Rick Walsh), Carleton; Margie (Ronnie) Swim, Wedgeport; brother, Arthur (Mildred), Yarmouth; sister-in-law, Benita; as well as many nieces and nephews. Grampy was loved very much and will be missed by his 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, Alvin and Alice (Carter) Porter; his beloved wife of 54 years, Agnes (Williams), who passed away in 2004; sister, Dorothy; brothers, Donald, Kenneth and Victor; and he was heart-broken to lose his granddaughter, Kim Winship, in 2010. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yarmouth. Visitation took place Tuesday, July 10 from 7-9 p.m., with prayers at 8 p.m., in Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral mass was held Wednesday, July 11 at 2 p.m. from St. Ambrose Cathedral, Father John MacPherson officiated. Interment followed in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery. Family flowers only, please.
