John Hughes Hoben, 78, of Hebron, Yarmouth Co., passed away January 4, 2010, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital.
He was born January 5, 1931 in Sydney, Cape Breton.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Annie (LeBlanc); seven children, Wanda Hoben, Debbie MacIsaac (Gerald), Sylvia Fougere (George), Roland Hoben (Anna), Rose Anne Brannen (David) and Heather MacPherson (Richard); four grandchildren, Melany Creaser, Lacey Hoben, Naaman Creaser and Calvin MacIsaac; sisters, Hilda, Odie, Evelyn and Mary.
He was predeceased by daughter, Belinda Hoben.
A hard working entrepreneur, John moved his family and business (Northside Paving) to Yarmouth in 1970. He was also the owner of A&K Lick a Chick (Dayton & Meteghan). His business ventures grew to include Yarmouth Roofing, Dayton Enterprises and Sandseal Enterprises. A devoted father, he was most proud of his family. His greatest strength was bestowing the importance of family and he was happiest surrounded by them. His passions also included business, talking politics and travel. He held a special place for animals and in his earlier years, enjoyed hobby farming.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sweeny’s Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Yarmouth. Funeral mass will be held Thursday, Jan. 7 at 10 a.m. from St. Ambrose Cathedral with Fr. John MacPherson officiating. Interment will take place at a later date.
