Andrew N. Reid, 82, of Victoria Haven Nursing Home, Glace Bay passed away at the Glace Bay Hospital on January 5, 2010.
Andrew had a great sense of humour and was very kind hearted. He loved music especially band and orchestra music and he was a great tuba player.
Born in Donkin, Cape Breton, Andrew was the son of the late John Robert and Sadie (Matheson) Reid. He worked for the Dominion Coal Company in #24, #1B and #26 collieries. Andrew played for the Donkin Citizens Brass Band before moving to New Rochelle, New York in 1955. Andrew worked and was also a musician in New York and played with the Westchester Symphony Orchestra and also the Port Chester Legion Band. He had the honour of playing for President John F. Kennedy while with the Port Chester Legion Band in Port Chester New York.
Andrew moved back to Donkin in 1977 to help his father and mother and worked for Devco and played in several bands in the area. Andrew had a special fondness for the Salvation Army and was often asked to be a guest player in their band in his younger years.
Andrew is survived by his daughter, Evelyn Reid, Glace Bay, daughter, Elaine (John) Mancuso, grandchildren, John Jr. , Christopher and Ashley all of Newark, Delaware; son, Harry Reid, Niagara Falls, New York and brother, Campbell (Hazel) Reid, Halifax.
He was predeceased by brothers, John, Hughie, Holland and a sister in infancy.
Visitation for Andrew Reid will be held on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010 from 1-3 p.m. at Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay with funeral service to follow in Patten Funeral Home chapel with Captain Kristian Simms officiating. Cremation will follow.
Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the Alzheimer’s Society.
