LOIS E. HOIRUP April 13, 1912 - January 16, 2009 Lois was born in Odessa, South Dakota, five years before WWI and within hours of the historical sinking of the great Titanic. In the past century she witnessed amazing accomplishments of the modern world, from Amelia Earhart's Aviation triumphs to the high tech rocket world landing men on the moon, as well as the wonder of modern medicine. As a child her mother sent her to an apothecary for 6 ounces of disinfectant costing 35 cents. The present trade name is known as Purex. Jello was developed and marketed at 5 cents per package also. The first telephone system she knew were wires strung along pasture fences connecting farming communities . . . a stretch to the cellphone era. From silent movies and 'talkies' to satellite and home theatre systems. Her passion was journalism having been employed to several newspapers in her working career and writing documentary for historical editions. She attended teacher's college, paid for by her grandmother and in later years repaid in kind to numerous young peoples' education. She taught all grades in several one room school houses on the North Dakota Prairies. She and Jack immigrated to Canada, June 1964, settling in the Vavenby area. Prior to immigrating to Canada their children were raised in the Puget Sound country of Washington State. Though she suffered from Alzheimer's in her late years, she enjoyed being cared for by her grandson, JR Hoirup and his wife Laurie, Sacramento, California. Predeceased by her husband, Jacob P. Hoirup, son Paul, and brothers Lester, Robert and Raymond. Surviving, are sons Jacob R. Hoirup (Georgia), Las Vegas, Nevada, Peter J. Hoirup (Sammie), Bonnie Lake, Washington, Keith M. Hoirup, Tacoma, Washington; daughter Loisann Sonneson (Len), Clearwater, B.C.; sister Stella Furnish, Buckley, Washington; ten grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
