Burry, Emily Dorothy, 84, Truro, passed away Tuesday, January 12, 2010 in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro surrounded by her family. Born July 7, 1925 in Wesleyville, Bonnavista Bay, NL, she was a daughter of the late William and Margaret Hutchings. As a curious child, Emily grew up along the rocky seashore with her brother William and parents. Emily completed high school in this quaint fishing village where everyone was like family who looked after and helped others whenever needed. Emily played the organ in the local country church. Emily attended Memorial University in St. John’s where she obtained her teaching degree. What a scholar Emily was. Emily taught in Brahet Musgravetown, Brookfield, on the ridge outside St. John’s and last but no means least Winterton, and St. John’s. Emily fell in love with a hometown gent Cyril Dyke, married in 1949 and had a son Keith and identical twin daughters Claudia and Claudette. Family and family friends meant the world to Emily. She moved to Truro in 1964 and successfully operated a corner Pizza Grocery Store on Dominion Street.
She was predeceased by her first husband Cyril; son Keith and granddaughter Julia Mackenzie.
She is survived by her husband Claude Burry; daughters Claudia, Claudette; step-daughters Jean and Joan; step-son Wayne; grandchildren Claudia, Colin, Suzanne, Nicholas, Allison; daughter-in-law Susan; step-grandchildren, Joanne, Colin, Andrew, Peter, and Emily’s one and only precious brother Bill. Emily’s grandchildren were the love of her life.
Visitation will be 6-8 pm Friday, Jan. 15 and funeral service on Saturday Jan. 16, at 2 pm, all in the Mattatall~Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro. Rev. David Lutes will officiate with a reception to follow in the funeral home. Burial will take place at a later date in Robie Street Cemetery, Truro. Donations in Emily’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of choice.
