UNGER, Henry, age 87, passed away at the Swift Current Care Centre in the morning hours on Tuesday, September 4, 2012. Henry was born on July 23, 1925, in Halbstadt, Russia to John & Margaret Unger. He was not quite two years old when the family immigrated to Canada, settling in the Ernfold/Kelstern, SK area. Henry was the oldest son of eight children and learnt very early how to work hard. In his childhood, he enjoyed and was very good at trapping and hunting. He had a .22 calibre rifle that rarely missed. After high school, he worked at Swift’s Meat Packing Plant in Winnipeg, sending money home to support his parents and siblings. He then attended Herbert Bible School for four years where he met his future wife, Alvina Redekop. After graduation, they were married June 30, 1948, at Main Centre Mennonite Brethren Church. They then farmed five years near Ernfold, SK. It was here that they lost their first son, Murvin, at almost eight months of age. Henry & Alvina then bought farmland near Main Centre, SK, where they were blessed with four children. Henry took great pride in raising Registered Hereford cattle. He was also always ready to help a neighbor in need, especially with butchering beef or pork and sausage making. He also enjoyed attending UGG (United Grain Growers) conferences in Winnipeg as the local delegate. Board by board and nail by nail, he, together with his son Darrel, tore down the Main Centre Elevator in 1983 and 1984. He donated a lot of the wood to West Bank Bible Camp. Henry Loved, Served and Worshiped the Lord and was a gifted Sunday School teacher for many years. After retiring, they did volunteer work at several places some of those being MCC in Akron, Pennsylvania for two years, and Okanogan Gleaners, in BC. Dad also developed some hobbies especially woodworking and decorative metalworking. Checkers and crokinole were his favorite games, but he played many kinds with his grandchildren and others who would challenge him. Henry was predeceased by his infant son, Murvin Kenneth; his parents John & Margaret; his sisters, Annie (in infancy), Mary Loewen; his brothers, Ed, Jake, Abe; and by numerous in-laws. He is survived by his wife, Alvina, Swift Current, SK; his children, Lorna (Rod) Jahnke, Moose Jaw, SK, Glenda (Jim) Robinson, Carberry, MB, Darrel (Sherry) Unger, Rush Lake, SK, Marlin Unger, Halifax, NS; his eleven grandchildren and their spouses; his six great-grandchildren; his brothers, John, Peter; his sister, Margaret Remple; and by numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews. The pianist for the service was Karen Grand with a musical selection brought by the Redekop Family singing, “It Is Well with My Soul”. The life history and tribute was shared by his brother, Dr. John Unger. “When We All Get to Heaven” and “The Love of God” were sung by the congregation under the direction of John Redekop. The Interment Service preceded the Funeral Service and was held at the Mennonite Brethren Church Cemetery, Main Centre, SK with the following grandsons serving as pallbearers, Aaron Jahnke, Michael Jahnke, Ryan Jahnke, Tennesy Unger, Douglas Robinson, Troy Unger, Ronald Robinson and Steven Robinson.
