Merle was born in Indian Head, Saskatchewan March 19th, 1930 to Stanley and Elizabeth Law. She attended school in Indian Head graduating with grade 12. During the war years, while her father was serving overseas, she lived with her mother and brother Donald and she worked at various jobs in the community. She met her husband, Theodore Edward (Blondie) Philipchuk, while he was working on a Sask Power crew in Indian Head. They were married January 21st, 1950 and later moved to Balcarres. While living in Balcarres, their daughters Penny and Sheree were born. Transfers with Sask Power took them to Weyburn and then to Swift Current in 1961. Ted and Merle were very active in the Kinsmen and Kinettes. They enjoyed Kinsmen conventions, socials and fundraising. Merle also helped out with the S.C. Band Auxiliary. She raised Springer Spaniels and Cocker Spaniels and later Siamese cats. Ted and Merle had a summer place at Lac Pelletier. There they enjoyed golfing, walking, gardening, taking care of the birds and visiting with family and friends. Merle was a quiet, reserved woman who, through her own admittance, was a homebody. She remained a homemaker her entire married life. She was a great cook and enjoyed gardening, sewing, reading and crossword puzzles. Family gatherings were very special to Merle and Ted. She will be greatly missed and always loved by her family. A family service was held Friday September 14th, 2012 at Memory Gardens, Swift Current, SK. Pastoral Assistant Barbara Wiebe officiated and Neil McCrie was the piper. Donations may be made to the SPCA or the Prairie Pioneers Lodge. Warren's Funeral Home were entrusted with the arrangements.
