A long time resident of Sydney, N.S., Bruce was very active in the community during his business life and after his retirement in 1986. He and Valerie moved to Dartmouth in 2007 to be near their daughter Faith and family. There, Bruce continued his community leadership at Parkland at the Lakes, writing a newsletter column "On the Bright Side" and leading a weekly devotional service.
Bruce contributed to communities his entire life. He served overseas during Second World War, receiving the Military Cross for bravery. After the war, he worked at the Royal Bank, trained as a Registered Industrial Accountant, taught in that degree program and became the Business Manager of the Cape Breton Post where he worked for 38 years. He was President of Boulderwood Development Company in Sydney. Bruce was a member of the United Church and very active as a Sunday School Superintendant, Elder, Presbytery Member and developer of the Mira Pines Camp. Bruce was actively involved in the Sydney business community: a member of Sydney City Council; involved in establishing the Sydney Playground Commission, Sydney Water Commission and the Cape Breton Regional Planning Commission; member and Director of the Sydney Board of Trade, the Sydney Harbour Board and the Children's Aid Society; founding member of the Cape Breton Tourist Association; member of the Advisory Board for Xavier Junior College and member of the Rotary Club. After his retirement, Bruce was a member of the Board of Directors of the United Way, V.O.N., Canadian Red Cross, Old Sydney Society and very active with the Kiwanis Golden K Club where he established a program of high school visits by transplant survivors to encourage pledges of organ donation. Bruce loved music and participated in church choirs and the Cape Breton Chorale throughout his life. He loved his family dearly and spent many happy hours with them at home, at the family cottage at Oakfield, Marion Bridge and during visits to their homes. Bruce's legacy of love, hard work and community service will be remembered by many.
