PICTOU – It is with heavy hearts and extreme sorrow that we announce the passing of our dear sister and aunt, Sheila MacKay.
After a brief illness that was a hard fought battle, she succumbed to her illness and passed away on October 1st at the QEII Health Sciences Centre (Infirmary Site). Sheila had a heart of gold and would do anything for her family and all of her friends and acquaintances near and far. She loved to banter with her family, especially her brothers-in-law. She could be sweet as sugar but also had a fiery spirit and didn’t mind giving you the business if need be! Sheila had a passion for animals but it was her cats that reaped the benefits of this passion. She would never see a cat go hungry and fed and adopted many over the years. It is evident that she was loved by so many, especially her family who loved her dearly. She was employed with Eastern Sign Print for 26 years and with Sobeys Store in Pictou where she enjoyed meeting the familiar faces of the town. Sheila loved her nieces and nephews and treated them as her grandchildren and they loved her like a grandmother. She was one of their biggest cheerleaders in their sporting events and was so proud of all of their accomplishments and didn’t mind telling anyone who would listen about them!
One of her greatest accomplishments came after the loss of our parents, when she played a significant role in raising the three youngest children: (Wayne, Cathy and Kim) and seeing them off to Community College and University.
She is survived by her brothers, Jimmy (wife Lyn, children Tony, Chris (wife Allison), Jim (partner Sarah) and Wayne; as well as sisters, Shirley Dunn (husband George, children Angela and Belinda), Louise Nichol (husband David, children Cheryl and Mark, Cheryl’s partner Robert and children Hayley, Colbey and Alanna), Cathy Currie (children Emma and Brynn), Kim Whynot (husband Fred, children Bailey, Kyle and Natalie); and niece, Vicki Fultz (Richard) and nephew, Charles Bond.
She was predeceased in 1974 by her mother, Victoria in 1982 by her father, George and in 1985 by her sister, Sharon (Bond).
We are so grateful for the amazing cardiac and neurological team at the QEII for working so hard to do the best they could for our wonderful sister. A special thanks to two special nurses, Elaine and Tracy. We will never forget the care and compassion shown to Sheila over the past two weeks!
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou, where visitation will be held on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be held at the Stella Maris Roman Catholic Church, Pictou on Friday at 11 a.m., with Father Gerald Campbell officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Flowers are welcome and donations in her memory may be made to the Pictou County SPCA.
