BURNS, LAWRENCE FREDERICK - It is with great sadness the family announce the death of Fred Burns of Saint John, who passed away at the Kennebec Manor on Friday, October 5, 2012 after a courageous and lengthy battle with cancer and its after effects. Born December of 1947 he was the son of the late James E. and Mary Loretta (Shannon) Burns. He worked for Irving Tissue for 30 years retiring due to his illness. Fred was an outstanding basketball and baseball player and could have played in the major leagues. He was a member of the Lorneville Mariners and coached basketball at Harbour View High. Fred was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, all those who knew him loved him. Fred loved unconditionally and never judged people. He enjoyed the outdoors especially golfing, hunting and fishing. Fred is survived by his wife of 25 years Mary (MacMillan) of Saint John, son Troy Burns (Angela) of Saint John; daughters Sarah Martz (Gabe) of Charleston, SC and Shannon Milutin (Nick) of Saint John; precious grandchildren Shelby, Isabel, Layla, Maddox, Sawyer and twins Zander and Ieyden; brothers Joe (Barb) of Saint John, Norman of Garnett Settlement, Billy, Mike (Karen), Jimmy (Judy) all of Saint John and Kenny (Sheri) of Norton; sisters Joan Bastarache (Billy) of Saint John, Betty Lanigan of Welsford, Peggy Matheson (Bob) of Montreal, Tina Matheson (Donny) of Saint John and Connie Hooper of Saint John; sister-in-law Margie Burns ; brothers-in-law Larry Mason and Bill Shea; extended family sisters-in-law and brother-in-law Margaret Melanson, Barbara Pitt, Brenda Gould and Barry MacMillan; nieces, nephews, great-nieces& nephews and many friends. Besides his parents, Fred was predeceased by sisters Casey Shea, Susie Mason, brother Pat Burns, sister-in-law Dot Burns and brothers-in-law Danny Hooper and Jimmy Lanigan.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Fundy Funeral Home 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424). By request there will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at the Hillcrest Baptist Church, 476 Lancaster Avenue at 2:00 p.m. Donations in Fred’s memory can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
