Paul Huggard

Paul Huggard

HUGGARD, PAUL LAWSON - It is with great sadness that the family of Paul Lawson Huggard of Saint John, announces his passing at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Saturday, October 27, 2012, with his family at his side. Paul was born in September of 1943 in Gagetown, New Brunswick, to the late Edith (Lawson) and Otty Huggard, and in these early years of his life he had privilege of living in the Sir Leonard Tilley House. He moved to Sussex in elementary school, where he had a full childhood of playing sports, forming lifelong friendships and spending many happy summers with his cousin Alan at the family farm in Rexton. Paul's love of horses was born here and many years later he fondly recalled the memorable times he spent swimming with the horses at the end of a sunny day. Paul graduated from Sussex High School and attended the New Brunswick Community College. He moved with his wife Judy to Saint John, where he started working for Lounsbury Industrial in the parts department, and eventually worked his way up to manager of the Saint John branch. He and Judy enjoyed many travels in the early years of their marriage, with horse races his favourite destination. He later worked for Standard Equipment where he has been the company's sales manager for the last 27 years. Paul had many interests: he loved horse-racing, sports, a good game of cards, and playing the odds. As a youth, Paul was an able soccer and hockey player. He coached many hockey teams in Saint John and was fondly known as "Norm" or "Huggie" by many. Paul's love of sports was shared by his son Bob. Paul followed many sports on TV, and he and Bob loved to poke fun at each other over the wretched performance of the other's favourite team. Paul was born large (more than 11 pounds) and carried his large but unassuming personality with him throughout his life. Thanks to his mom's excellent cooking he acquired a taste for good food, always followed by a little something sweet. Every Sunday when Bob was a child Paul took him in hand to the Kwik Pik and Bob could spend an entire dollar on his favourite sweets. As "Grampie" he always had a treat or two tucked away for Kayla and Ben. They will always cherish their time together. Paul will be lovingly remembered by his wife Judy (Norrad), his son, Bob (Pam) of Halifax, NS, his beloved grandchildren, Kayla and Ben, brothers David (Barb) of Fredericton, Peter (Linda) of Calgary, AB; several nieces and nephews, and many cousins. He also leaves his canine "baby," KB. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his nephew Marc. Paul's easygoing nature, kind heart, and wry sense of humour made him a friend to many. He will be greatly missed.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424) with visitation on Tuesday, October 30th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, October 31, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Private family interment at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations in Paul’s memory can be made to the Children’s Wish Foundation, Saint John Animal Rescue League or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
