Darold William Kaluza
1926 - 2012
“A life well lived...”
AMHERST - Darold Kaluza spent his last days surrounded by many friends and family prior to his death on October 23, 2012 at Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Amherst, NS.
At his side through it all, was his loving and devoted wife of 58 years, Reta Helen Kaluza ( Oickle), who Darold always described as the “best woman in the world.” With Darold were his wife, children and grand sons.
He is survived by his children Donna and husband Murray Genik of BC; Jim and wife Diana (Fahey), grandsons Tyrel and John of Port Howe; Laura and husband Ken Brown, grandsons Michael, Matthew and Mark of Truro. He is survived by and will be dearly missed by many nieces, nephews and cousins throughout Canada, the United States and Germany.
The last surviving member of his immediate family he was predeceased by his parents John and Anna Kaluza of Oxford, and sisters Anna and Lottie and brothers Joe, Edward, Paul and Victor.
He spent his early years in Oxford, River Hebert and Springhill where he worked both in the coal mine and as a mechanic. He settled in West Pugwash in 1954 with Reta where they built a service station which they ran side by side until 1989 some 35 years.
Darold was strongly involved with the Masonic Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star and the Shrine for many years, where he focused his energies in support of raising funds for sick children.
Darold took great joy in his work to support children—-and for children in general whom he always had a soft spot in his heart. Over the years he often told how he had given a local boy or girl “their very first ice cream cone” at his garage in West Pugwash.
An avid lover of the woods and rivers, he was known to search for night crawlers at 3 am, be at the river fishing trout by 5 and frying them at 7 am in the kitchen. Hunting and fishing were passions, not hobby, shared with his brothers since boyhood and later with friends at the wharf and the pond with Reta at Little River.
We will miss the stories, the winks and the loving jovial man that we called husband, Dad, Papa, Uncle, Brother and friend.
Darold’s remains were entrusted into the care of the W. Allen Funeral Home, Oxford (902-447-2167) with public visitation on Friday. Funeral service was held at the funeral home on Saturday, October 27, 2012 at 1 pm, Rev. William Cook officiating. Burial in Pine Grove Cemetery, Oxford. Acadia Lodge # 13 F and AM will hold their memorial tribute service Friday at 6:30 at Allen Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a memorial fund for Christopher and Vicki Patriquin and family through the Scotiabank in Pugwash, Amherst, Oxford and Tatamagouche.
