Reta “Veta” Elizabeth Holmes, age 93 of 100 High St., Stellarton, passed away Thursday, November 1st, 2012 surrounded by her loving family in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Born in Charlos Cove, N.S. on November 16, 1918, she was a daughter of the late Stephen and Margaret (Casey) Snyder.
She was a resident of Mulgrave prior to moving to Stellarton in 1959. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church and Our Lady of Lourdes CWL. Reta was also a member of the Thistle Quilt Guild.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Reta is survived by daughters, Barbara (Dennis) Payne, Westboro, Mass.; Myla Mannion-MacDonald, Stellarton; sons: Lionel (Helen), Stellarton; Steve (Judy), Truro; Leslie “Skipper” (Brenda MacKenzie), Westville; grandchildren: John Payne, Lisa Bourgeois, Annette Massey, Seamus Mannion, Kevin Mannion, Melanie MacDonald, Erik MacDonald, Brad Holmes and Stephen MacKenzie. She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Leslie “Les” Holmes, five sisters and a brother.
Visitation will be in the H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Chapel, Stellarton from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, November 4th. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 5th, from Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church with Father Peter MacDonald officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. A reception will follow the service in the Sister Catherine Steele Centre.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Alzheimer Society or to a charity of one’s choice.
