Clarence Bernard Martin Landry

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of a dear husband, father, and grandfather at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012.
Born in Whitney Pier, Sept. 30, 1924, he was the son of the late Peter and Mildred (Jollymore) Landry.
Clarence enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy on Sept. 30, 1943, and served on the HMCS Levis and was discharged Dec. 7,1945. He married his sweetheart and soulmate, Charlotte (Orychock) on July 4, 1945.
He worked as a meat cutter at Gillis’s in Whitney Pier for several years, then at Metropolitan Life Insurance where he met several life time friends. Clarence joined the Sheriffs Department in 1974 where he worked until he retired as chief deputy sheriff in Sydney, and acting sheriff in Arichat in 1989.
Clarence was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 151 and was active in all legion activities. He was also a founding member of the Cape Breton Naval Veterans Association. Clarence was an exercise instructor for the exercise group at Branch 151. He was also involved in the past with The Knights of Columbus, as well as a volunteer with Meals On Wheels, and numerous other community service projects.
Left to mourn his passing his wife, Charlotte Cecilia of 67 years; his children, Patricia Marie (Glen) Martin, Sydney, and Peter Anthony Landry, Halifax; his two grandchildren, Cameron and Jackson Martin — his special shipmates. Also his brother-in-law, James Gallant, sisters-in-law, Annie Hewak, Catherine Orychock and Mary Orychock; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Clarence was predeceased by his parents, as well as his sister, Constance Elizabeth Gallant, a sister in infancy, and his brothers, Leo and Robert Landry. Also predeceased by his sisters-in-law, Nellie Litowski, Agnes Ojolick and Pearl Landry, and brothers-in-law, Tony Orychock, Stanley Orychock, Walter Hewak, Harry Ojolick and William Litowski.
Memorials in his memory may be made to a charity of choice.
Visitation for Mr. Landry will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Monday from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima with Fr. Duaine Devereaux officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery.
