Passed peacefully away on Tuesday November 27, 2012 at the Palliative Care Unit, Leonard A. Miller Centre, following a long and courageous battle with cancer, Bernard Whelan of Riverhead, St. Mary’s Bay, aged 70 years. Predeceased by parents Thomas & Deborah (nee Nolan) Whelan, sister Carolyn Curtis and parents-in-law Simon & Marcella (nee Kielly) Hearn. Left to mourn his passing with fond and loving memories are his wife Margaret (nee Hearn); brother Owen Whelan; sisters: Bridget (Randy) Rodgers, Teresa (Ron) Rollings and Patricia (Bob) Hall; brothers-in-law: Eugene (Marilyn) Curtis, James Hearn and Wayne (Diane) Hearn. Ben leaves to mourn many friends and relatives and also many nieces and nephews whom he watched grow to become beautiful and successful adults. Ben’s career began with Commercial Cables in St. John’s and his work brought him to Cuba, Venezuela and several other locations before settling in Montreal where he worked with Teleglobe Canada until his retirement in 1999. Many acquaintances were made during this time with each and every one of them playing an important part in his life. He retired in Riverhead where he spent his last years involved in the life of his community. Resting at Gibbons’ Funeral Home, St. Mary’s, on Wednesday, November 28, from 7 – 9 p.m. and Thursday, November 29, 2 – 4 p.m., 7 – 9 p.m. (no visitation on Friday). Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, November 30, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, St. Mary’s. Burial to follow at St. Joseph the Worker Cemetery, Riverhead. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations may be made in his memory to Our Lady of the Assumption Church. May His Kind and Gentle Soul Rest in Peace.
