BATES, DENNIS ROBERT (Maj. Ret'd) - Dennis Robert Bates (Maj. Ret'd), 66, of Lower Sackville, passed away November 29, 2012 at home. Born in Calgary, Alberta, he was a son of the late Robert and Joyce (Sanford) Bates. Dennis joined the military at the age of seventeen and enjoyed a 39 year career in the Military Police. After he retired from the military, he worked for eight years as a commissionaire with both DND and the Stanfield International Airport. He was an avid CFL fan and was very proud to have won the football pool he was in just before he passed away. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Grace (O'Kane) Bates; son, Robert, Lower Sackville; brother, Donald (Debbie), Devon, Alberta; sister; Sharon (Wayne) Carpenter, Nordic, Alberta, as well as his cousin Michael (Deb), Calgary, Alberta.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Atlantic Funeral Home 125 Sackville Drive, Lower Sackville, NS. A legion service and reception will be held 7 pm Monday, December 3, 2012 at the Royal Canadian Legion, Calais Branch #162, Lower Sackville, NS. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to the Palliative Care unit of the QEII VG site, Halifax Nova Scotia or the Canadian Red Cross.
