Ronald Patrick Hynes

Passed peacefully away on December 15, 2012 following a courageous battle with cancer, with his loving family by his side. Family mattered most to Ron. He loved his wife, children and grandchildren with all his heart. Ron will be deeply missed by his wife of 43 years, Sheila (Scott) and his four children and their spouses: Susan and her husband Mark Crosbie, Valerie and her husband John Veitch, Geoffrey and his wife Susan Goodyear-Hynes, and Mark and his wife Melissa. He will also be greatly missed by his seven grandchildren: Sarah and Rebecca Crosbie, Andrew, Isabella and Benjamin Veitch, and Maria and James Goodyear-Hynes. Ron is predeceased by his parents: William and Catherine; his brothers: Gregory and Frank and by his sisters: Rita and Bella. He leaves behind his two brothers: Bert and Gerard, and an extended family of cousins, nephews and nieces. He will also be sadly missed by a large and supportive network of friends and colleagues. Ron was born on St. Brendan’s Island in Bonavista Bay on August 23, 1942. Following completion of his Arts and Education degrees from Memorial University he returned to St. Brendan’s to teach. He completed his Masters of Education from the University of Saskatchewan and returned to St. John’s where he taught at Gonzaga High School. He later worked with the Roman Catholic School Board where he stayed until his retirement. On retirement, he continued to be very active volunteering on numerous boards and political campaigns. He loved playing hockey and golf and was very active in both over the years. The family wishes to thank Dr. Joy McCarthy, her team at the Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre and Dr. Mercedes Penton for all of their care and support. A special thanks to the fine staff on 4 North A of the Health Sciences Centre for the excellent care they provided Ron in his final week. Resting at Caul’s Funeral Home, LeMarchant Rd. Visitation on Monday and Tuesday from 2 - 4 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m. Funeral Mass will take place on Wednesday, December 19th, 2012 at 9:30 am from St. Pius X. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in Ronald’s memory may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
