BABINEAU, ELMONDE - Elmonde Babineau, 94, originally from St. Louis-de-Kent passed away peacefully at the Dr. Georges L. Dumont Hospital on December 22. Elmonde was married to Jerry Babineau who passed away in 1957. She was the last remaining member of her family of 15 siblings. She was the proud mother of three children - Donald (Madeleine) of Montreal, Elsie (Don Amos) and Nicole, both of Halifax. "Mémère", as she was affectionately known to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, will be missed by her entire extended family and her many friends in St. Louis as well as at the Notre Dame Manoir where she lived for the last years of her life. After the untimely passing of her husband, Elmonde moved from St. Louis to Saint John to raise and support her family by working at the Lantic Sugar Refinery. After retiring, she moved back to St. Louis and spent her summers at her favourite place - her waterfront cottage in Petite Aldouane. Elmonde loved a good party and being where the action was - she could always be found in the centre of the dance floor if the music was playing - a passion she maintained into her 90s. It wasn't uncommon in the summer that her children and grandchildren would be going to bed while she would be on her way out the door to the nearest dance or party. She had countless close friends and loved to drive all over Kent County to visit them. Elmonde was a strong, smart, hardworking, independent and loving woman who served as a role model to her family. The family would like to thank the staff of the Notre Dame Manoir for the wonderful care Elmonde received during her time at their facility.
Cremation and final arrangements are in the care of Thompson's Funeral Home, St. Louis. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 pm on Thursday and 12 to 2 pm on Friday. A funeral service will be held on Friday at 2 pm at the Catholic church in St. Louis. Reception to follow after the service. Donations in memory of Elmonde may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
