Douglas T Slater

Slater, Douglas T. passed away January 17, 2013 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro surrounded by his loving family. Doug was born in Roachvale, Guysborough County on September 10, 1921, son of the late Roland and Nellie (Sangster) Slater. He completed high school in Roachvale, graduated from Normal College, Truro and taught school in rural Nova Scotia. Joining the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942, he trained and served as a Radar Technician until the war ended. Doug then attended the Nova Scotia Agricultural College, Truro, MacDonald College and McGill University in Montreal, obtaining his BSc and MSc in Plant Science. He joined the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture, Truro in 1951 as Agronomist, responsible for teaching Agronomy at the Agriculture College and forage crop extension. During this period, Doug met with many Nova Scotia farmers through meetings, farm calls and short courses. Discussions dealt with the use of ground limestone, soil fertility, improved seed mixtures, grass and corn silage, haylage, alfalfa for hay and overall pasture management. Other activities included judging Pasture Competitions, co-ordination of Nova Scotia Community Pastures, Farmer Tours and supervising 4-H crop clubs. While working with grain clubs, he coached a 4-H Seed Grain judging team to National competition at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, Toronto. In 1965 he transferred to the Soils and Crops Branch , Nova Scotia Dept. of Agriculture. Appointed Cereal Specialist, he became involved with spring grain, winter cereals, grain, corn, soybeans and evaluation of new field crops. Through County Soil and Crop Improvement Associations he established on-farm plots demonstrating benefits of new varieties , early seeding, tramlines and related cereal crop technology. As Secretary of the Atlantic Field Crops Committee, Doug maintained liaisons with field crop specialists and research personnel of the Atlantic Region and beyond. He co-authored farm bulletins on Field Peas, Winter Cereals, Field Crop Guides and Varietals Recommendations for the Atlantic Provinces. The “Soil and Crop” newsletter to Nova Scotia Agricultural Representatives and the media, originated from his office. Doug was interested in Nova Scotia County Exhibitions and frequently judged their Field Crop and Vegetable exhibits. During the mid 70’s he was privileged on two occasions to judge Field Crop Seed Classes at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, Toronto. He was a member of the Agricultural Institute of Canada, Nova Scotia Institute of Agrology, Canadian Seed Growers Association (C.S.GA.) and the Canadian Society of Agronomy. Secretary of the Maritime Branch C.S.G.A. for several years, he administered an assistance policy for Nova Scotia Pedigreed Seed Growers. He carried out Nova Scotia Seed Drill surveys and was instrumental in the establishment of several seed cleaning and treating facilities in the province. Doug was elected an Honorary Life Member of the Canadian Seed Growers Association in recognition of services to the Association. He also received the Distinguished Life member award from the Nova Scotia Institute of Agrology. A member of Truro Immanuel Baptist Church, Doug served as Deacon, choir member, Sunday School Teacher, Chairman, Board of Christian Education and Superintendent of the Extension Sunday School. Past President of the local Home and School Association, he has been a Kinsman, Curler, Barber-shopper and a Golden K club member. Doug was interested in gardening, hunting, fishing and camping with his family. His most enjoyable experiences were spent with family and friends at their summer cottage on Shortts Lake. With over 30 years in Scouting he graduated from Group Committee to Cub Master and Past President of Colchester District Boy Scout Council. Doug was predeceased by his first wife, Eileen Jane (Hutchinson) Slater; sisters, Eva Cullen, Halifax, Rosanna Hart, Port Shoreham, infant sister and Dorothy MacKenzie, New Glasgow He is survived by daughters, Barbara Bishop (Peter Allen), Grand Pre, Shirley (Bryan) Willett, Bridgetown, Jeanette Slater (Charles) Norminton, Guelph; son, Roland (Naomi) Slater, Mt. Uniacke; second wife, Beryle (Geddes) Slater; Doug’s stepson, Randy (Ann), Sackville, N.B.; grandchildren, Rebecca (Rob) O’Brien, Kristopher (Ang) MacEachern, Brittany Bishop, Dena Willett, Sarah Willett, Kristy (Andrew) Kloosterhuis, Robert (Teresa) Hillis; step-grandsons, Michael Geddes, Sussex, N.B., Mark Geddes, Charlottetown, P.E.I. and five great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruby McGrath, Fort MacMurray, Alta. and Erna (Phil) Webster, Kennebunkport, Maine. Visitation on Tuesday, January 22 from 6-8 pm; funeral service on Wednesday, January 23 at 2 pm, both in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro with Rev. Cory Somers and Pastor Kaj Binderup officiating. Reception to follow the service. Spring interment in Bible Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Immanuel Baptist Church Building Fund, Truro or a charity of choice. In the event of inclement weather, the visitation will take place on Wednesday from 12 noon until time of the service at 2 pm.
