It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Annie Mae Ponee on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
She was a wonderful and caring mother, wife, sister and grandmother who will be sadly missed.
Annie Mae served in the Canadian Women’s Army Corps during the Second World War and worked at Woolco for several years.
Annie Mae is survived by eight children: sons, Sam (Linda), Halifax, Lawrence (Adele), B.C., Barry, Manitoba, Julian (Janine), Ontario, Trevor (Mary Francis), Halifax; daughters, Maureen (Brian) Adam, Westmount, Brenda Dixon, Sydney, Yvette (Dave) Hicks, Halifax. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Annie Mae was predeceased by her parents: mother, Mary Louise Guiffre (Cottrell) and father, Stephen Lawrence Guiffre, husband, Edward, grandchildren, Barry and Stephanie, sister, Louise and son-in-law, Stewart Dixon.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at Holy Rosary Church, Westmount, with Fr. Douglas Murphy officiating. Interment to follow in the parish cemetery.
The family would like to thank Dr. D’Intino, nurses and staff of the palliative care unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for their kindness and care shown to Annie Mae and her family. The family would also like to thank the nurses, staff and patients of Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Irish Cove unit.
