It is with a saddened heart that I announce the passing of my beloved mother Greta (Nerie) Keen on Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
In addition to myself, her son Patrick ‘PJ’ Keen, my mother leaves her sister, Lauretta McKay who resides with her daughter in Markham, Ont.
Greta was the daughter of the late Anthony Nerie and Nora (Goodwin) Nerie of Sydney Mines.
She was predeceased by her husband, Patrick Jay Keen of Boston, Mass.
Greta had a varied and interesting career including the Harbourview Hospital, the steel plant during the Second World War, Vail’s Laundry and McCurdys before she moved to Boston to work at the New England Mutual Life Insurance Company. After retiring from the Liberty Mutual Insurance Company she returned to her beloved Cape Breton.
She will be sadly missed by her many nieces and nephews with whom she enjoyed frequent visits. She loved to have company that she entertained with her stories, laughter and jokes over a cup of tea.
She wished to be cremated and have no visitation. A funeral mass will be celebrated at the Sacred Heart Church, George Street, Sydney, Saturday, Jan. 23 at 10 a.m.
Burial will take place at a later date at St. Andrews Church Cemetery, Boisdale.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent to the Diabetes Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of one’s choice.
I would like to take this time to thank everyone that was so kind to my mother especially over the last few months. The VON, the Cape Breton Home Makers and all the doctors and staff at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
