It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Doctor Prabhat Kumar (PK) Chaturvedi at Glace Bay Hospital on Monday, Jan. 28, 2013.
Dr. Chaturvedi was born in Aligarh, India on July 5, 1937. He completed his degree in medicine at the University of Lucknow, and continued his studies in England where he obtained his Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons in 1967. He went on to receive Fellowships in Scotland, the United States and Canada. Dr. Chaturvedi was also invited, because of his significant body of research to become a member of The Royal Society of Medicine, United Kingdom. He first came to Canada in 1966 and returned in 1975 to Glace Bay to practise thoracic and general surgery, where he was recognized for his dedication to the medical profession.
Dr. Chaturvedi also loved those evenings spent cooking Indian food, often with vegetables and herbs from his garden, and discussing current affairs with family and friends. And indeed, many people in Glace Bay knew him as a true and generous friend.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Snehlata ‘Bitto’ Chaturvedi; daughter, Neha; and son, Nitin, both at home; two sisters, Shakuntla Chaturvedi and Ashok Sharma and many nieces and nephews around the world.
Dr. Chaturvedi was predeceased by his brother, KK Chaturvedi and his sister, Brijbala Chaturvedi.
Cremation will take place today (Wednesday) at 2:30 p.m. at the Cape Breton Crematorium, East Broadway Street, Whitney Pier. There will be a memorial service Friday, Feb. 1 at 2 p.m. followed by a reception, both in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
Donations in Dr. Chaturvedie’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of one’s choice.
