Howie MacKinnon, 55, of Forsythe Street, New Waterford, passed away Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, at his residence.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Howard and Emeline (Corbett) MacKinnon.
Howie was a member of Calvin United Church, New Waterford. He was employed with Devco for 22 years, working in Lingan, Phalen and Prince Mines. After the mines, he worked for two years with Highland Fisheries, Glace Bay, then five years with Cape Breton Regional Housing. Howie loved the Toronto Maple Leafs and was able to attend one of their games in recent years; he also was an avid gardener, enjoying his vegetables and flowers. A gentle and easy going guy, Howie will be remembered as a loving family man, always there for his family with endless compassion.
Howie is survived by his wife, Linda (McKinnon) MacKinnon; two daughters, Melissa, at home, Tracy (Charles) Baker, New Waterford; and Malcolm (Allison) MacArthur, Peterborough, Ont. Also surviving are Howie’s two brothers, Billy (Fran) MacKinnon, Gordie MacKinnon, both in New Waterford; two sisters, Faye (Freddie) MacPhee, Glace Bay, Utah (Mario) Hogan, New Waterford; and one stepsister, Greta Kearney, New Waterford. Howie is survived by three grandchildren, Brandon, Cale, Kaiden; nieces and nephews. He will also be sadly missed by Cuddles his dog, whom he loved greatly.
Visitation for Howie will be held Monday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. The funeral service, officiated by Rev. Duncan Roach is Tuesday, 3 p.m. in Calvin United Church. Reception to follow at the Carmel Centre. Interment will be held at a later date in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy for Howie, donations in his memory may be made to Palliative Care or a charity of one’s choice.
