BURKE, Allan (Frenchie) Wilfred, Sandy Point, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, February 7, 2013. Born in D’Escousse, Cape Breton he was a son of the late Wilfred and Clara (Ranson) Burke. In his younger years he sailed on several Imperial Oil Tankers. When he moved to Shelburne he was employed in the fishing industry. Alan then worked at Shelburne Marine dry dock for many years. He was employed at Continental Seafoods as a Stationary Engineer retiring in 1991 due to ill health. He was Wharfinger and Harbour Master in Shelburne for several years. He was a loving husband, father, and Pops. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sandra (Murphy) daughter, Teresa (Peter) Huskilson, Sandy Point, son Dr. Andrew Burke (Dr. Candida Rifkind), Winnipeg. Grandchildren, Mia and Nina Huskilson. Brothers, Jerry, Caledonia, Alex, Dartmouth. Sisters, Lillian Myalls, Lunenburg, Vernice Burke, Halifax, Anna Decoste, Halifax; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his twin sister, Evangeline Giles and brother Ernest. Allan was a member of Saint Thomas Catholic Church in Shelburne serving for many years on the Parish Council looking after the maintenance of the Church and Rectory. He was an Honourary Member of the Shelburne Harbour Yacht Club for many years greeting visiting sailboats and making lasting friendships. He was a member of the Sandy Point Recreation Group. Allan was one of the founding members of the Shelburne Whirligig Festival. There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place under the direction of H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Shelburne. Funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at Saint Thomas Catholic Church Shelburne at 1:30 p.m. with Father Keith Billard officiating, interment in the Upper Sandy Point Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Upper Sandy Point Cemetery, Saint Thomas Catholic Church or charity of choice.
