STELLARTON – Vona Louise Porter, age 84, of Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow, formerly of Pleasant Ave., Stellarton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 26, 2010, in the Manor.
Born in Stellarton, she was the daughter of the late Angus and Georgina (MacKenzie) MacDonald.
Vona was a lifelong resident of Stellarton. She was a member of Sharon St. John United Church and a former member of the UCW. Vona was a member of the Stellarite Seniors Club and the Westville Heritage Group. She was a volunteer for the Red Cross and Meals on Wheels and also involved with the Pictou Centre PC Association and the PC Women’s Assoc. Her lifelong dedication to her family made her the anchor that made you feel that you could weather any storm in life.
Surviving are daughters, Karleen (David) Carrigan, Stellarton; Rhonda (Robert) Hamilton, Stellarton; grandchildren: David, Lee Ann, Michelle, Janet, Mark and Rachel; a number of great-grandchildren; a niece, Vona (Howard) Pyne, Harmony Ridge, Colchester Co.; a grandnephew, Karl Taylor, Stellarton
She was predeceased by her husband, R. Karl Porter; companion, William (Bill) Fleury; a sister, Constance Ryan.
Her remains will rest in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home for visitation from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday, from where funeral service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. with Rev. John Roy officiating. Burial will be in the Brookside Cemetery. A reception will follow the service in the funeral home.
