
Hazel Christena MacLeod (MacKinnon)
93, of Halifax, passed away peacefully in Abbie J. Lane Memorial Building, QEII, on Friday, February 15, 2013, following a brief illness.
Born in Martinvale, P.E.I., she was a daughter of the late Carl and Annie (MacInnis) MacKinnon. She is survived by daughters Margaret Anne (John) Westlie, Meadowbank, P.E.I.; Florence (Harley) Harper, Charlottetown, P.E.I.; son Rod (Jean) MacLeod, Bedford; grandchildren Jonathan and Adam Harper, and Janet (Brent) and Ian MacLeod. She is also survived by her sister, Eleanor (Emery) Downing, Kilmuir, P.E.I.; brother John (Shirley) MacKinnon, Dundas, Ont.; sister-in-law Mary MacKinnon, Montague, P.E.I.
She was predeceased by her husband, Reginald “Reg” in March 2007 after 64 years of marriage; brothers, Malcolm “Mac”, Vernon, Lorne, Roy and sister, Florence.
Hazel was a 69-year member of St. John’s United Church, Halifax. She was an active member of the Lydia Unit, Women’s Missionary Society, for many years. She received a commendation from the Canadian Cancer Society for her 25 years of volunteer service. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for 59 years, as a Charter Member of Armcrest Chapter No 45, and T.D. Mabe Chapter No 62. She served in many offices, as well as serving twice as Worthy Matron of Armcrest Chapter No. 45. She served as Secretary for many years for both Armcrest and T.D. Mabe Chapters. In 1977, she was elected Grand Secretary of the Grand Chapter of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island and served in that capacity for eight years. For her work as Grand Secretary, she was subsequently honoured with the title, Grand Secretary Emeritus. She was well-known and respected throughout the jurisdiction and made many friends through her association with the Order.
She was also skilled in knitting, a lifelong activity, creating many afghans, which she generously gave away as gifts, as well as knitting many pairs of mittens, which she donated to the church for distribution to less fortunate children.
For the past four months, she was in Abbie J. Lane Memorial Building, QEII, where she was cared for with compassion and kindness by the 9th floor staff.
The funeral will be held Wednesday, February 20 at 2 p.m. in Ferguson-Logan Funeral Home, Montague, P.E.I. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.
