NEW GLASGOW/TONEY RIVER – George Andrew ‘Buster’ Fisher, 92 of Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow, and formerly of Toney River, passed away peacefully January 26, 2010, in the manor.
Born at the family farm in Toney River, he was a son of the late Alexander and Elva (MacAulay) Fisher.
George, known for most of his life as ‘Buster,’ was the namesake of his grandfather, George Fisher, also a farmer. In his later years, he preferred the given name, George to his nickname, Buster. George grew up in Toney River and worked the land all of his life, living on the family homestead with his sister, Mary Fisher, and his parents. Playful and tolerant of the antics of children, he was very popular with his nieces and nephews who visited the family farm as often as possible. Although shy about public performance, he was known to have a fine singing voice, and it was a rare treat to listen unseen, as he sang while milking his cows in the barn. George had a sense of humour and a keen mind that made visits to his place a treat, and will be missed by those that knew him.
George is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
George was predeceased by his siblings: Mary Fisher, Doris (Fisher) McKay, and Annie (Fisher) Thompson.
His remains are resting at McLaren’s Funeral Home, Pictou, where visitation will be held on Thursday, January 28 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., from where funeral service will be held on Friday, January 29 at 2 p.m. with Jacquie Ross officiating. Interment will be in Riverbank Cemetery.
