Gerald Douglas 'Bear' Butts

It is with sadness and broken hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Gerald Butts on Feb. 20, 2013, at the Glace Bay Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Gerald was raised by his grandparents Jack and Leah (Smith) Butts. He was the son of Alice (Butts) Jardine and stepfather Donald Jardine.
He was a lifelong resident of Tower Road, Glace Bay.
Gerald was retired from Devco having worked 30 years in the mines and later as a Devco security guard. His passion in life was his family, his friends, and his pets. He and Marg enjoyed many camping trips and travelling, particularly to visit friends and family in Newfoundland. As a well-known member of the community he will be missed by many.
Alcoholics Anonymous was an important part of Gerald’s life. He proudly practised the steps for 45 years. He spent his life helping others and his home was always open to those in need.
Gerald is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marguerite (Adamson) Butts; children, Geraldine, Linda (Lester) Alderson, Barbara (Kevin) Hibbs, Johnny (Sheila), Ann Marie (Michael) Chipman. He is also survived by grandchildren, Craig, Sonya, Angela, Colin, David, Matthew, Ryan, Kaleigh, Kimberly, Jarret and Chad. He was also Poppy to his six great-grandchildren, Kaidyn, Karson, Hannah, Connor, Kale and Nathan. Also survived by siblings, Alfred (Alice), Gordon (Patti), Bud (Emily), Elsie (Paul) Miazga; brother-in-law, Pete Laffin, Colleen MacIntyre, Lawrence (Barb), Marilyn Carey, Lloyd (Shirley), Judy (Art) Sampson, Donna (Ken) Eveleigh, Bev (Al) Arnold and Patsy (Eric) Jessome.
Besides his parents and grandparents, Gerald was predeceased by children, Eric, Patsy and Donna, sisters, Bernice Jardine and Shirley Laffin, step-siblings, Hector Smith, Stella (Eric) Luffman, Gordon (Annie Mae) Smith, Sam (Lena) Smith and Sadie (Bob) Adams.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Patten Funeral Home, Glace Bay. Memorial service will be held Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at 2 p.m. in Newsom United Church with Rev. MacDonald and Nancy Whitney Latham officiating.
