Lieu de naissance : Doctor's Cove

Date de décès : 25 février 2013

MAHANEY, Phyllis Victoria, 88, Churchover, peacefully passed away to join her Lord and Saviour, on Monday, February 25, 2013 at her home, with her family by her side. Born May 24, 1924 in Doctor’s Cove, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Kathleen (Shand) Kenney. As a young woman, she put her gentle yet strong hands to work for Canada Post. With her five children in tow, she could be seen waiting for hours at the Birchtown railway station to exchange canvas bags of mail. The outgoing mail bag she would deliver and lift high to be hooked by the train as it slowed down, the incoming bag tossed from the train, she then delivered back to the Churchover and Birchtown post offices. After her employment with Canada Post, she joined the team at Nova Scotia Community College. There, she nurtured the students and faculty with her lovingly prepared meals and her endearing smile. Friends and family who visited her home were well taken care of with her pantry full of homemade treats and her joyous welcome. She was a talented craftsperson, her hands creating beauty in whatever she touched. She was an avid reader and loved music. Phyllis took great delight in the activities of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. With a sparkle in her eye, she travelled many miles to cheer them on at graduations, arenas, ball fields, concerts, hunting camps, sail boat races, just to name a few. Her faith in God and the people around her led her to support various church communities. Phyllis will be best remembered as a prayer warrior. She was a lifetime member of the Shelburne and Bear Point Baptist churches. She is survived by her children; Patricia Krafve (George Demings); Margo Goulden (Sterling); Betty Lou Townsend (Arnold); Kenney (Beatti); Mark (Janet Curtis); chosen daughter, Carol Bower (Tommy); nine grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. Also surviving are siblings, Beatrice Goodwin (Angus); Ralston Kenney and Blanch Goreham, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by Gordon, her loving husband of 57 years; sisters, Edith and Sarah; brother, William and a great-grandchild, Dakota. A celebration of her life was held Monday, March 4 at the Faith Wesleyan Church, Ingomar, Rev. John den Hollander and Pastor David Hockley officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Red Cross, Shelburne Special Olympics, IWK, or charity of choice. Special thanks to Dr. John Keeler and the staff of Shelburne County VON for their compassion and care. Thank you to Pastor Cindy Dunnett for her prayers and inspiration. To the “special” ladies who cared for Phyllis in her home, your devotion and love will never be forgotten. Interment in Carleton Village Cemetery.
