It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear friend, Bernice Wells, on Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010, at the Northside General Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Montreal, Que., she was a daughter of the late Arthur E. and Catherine P. (Martin) Abbey.
Bernice was a veteran of the Second World War serving with the Women Army Corp. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 19, North Sydney, and of St. Joseph parish, North Sydney. She is survived by her half-sister Aileen (Jim) Young, South Surrey, B.C.; also by best friend, Kay McGowan and caregivers, Sue and George Lewis, all of North Sydney. Bernice was predeceased by her husband, Henry Wells, sisters, Adele Chartrand, Joan Masanotti, brother, Gilbert Abbey and half-brother Harold Gough. There will be no visitation by request. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010, from the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home chapel, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney, with Rev. Jim Attwood officiating.
