GLENCOE – Lawrence Archibald Thompson, age 85 of Glencoe, Pictou County, passed away suddenly at home on Sunday, March 3, 2013.
Born in Glencoe on March 15th 1927, he was a son of the late Archibald and Sadie (Hattie) Thompson.
Lawrence was a resident of Glencoe for most of his life with the exception of a few years in Florida and Toronto.
He worked in the lumber business for some 40 years, operated a store in Bridgeville and also was an employee of the Trenton Car Works from where he retired. Lawrence was a member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church where he was an Elder, Past Treasurer, Choir Member and Past Chairman of the Board of Managers. He was an active member and held various posts with the MacDonald Rebekah Lodge #108 Sunny Brae, Union Lodge #30 IOOF Springville and Wawbeek Encampment #12 Pictou, also the Canton Dryden Lodge #2Westville. He organized the annual Glencoe Remembrance Day Service and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Eureka Branch. Along with his volunteer work, Lawrence loved maintaining the family homestead in Glencoe. He had a great appreciation for the outdoors and quietly set an example for us all to follow. He led his life with dignity and humility.
Lawrence is survived by sisters: Violet Roy Marguerite Campbell; a brother John M. (Jack); many cousins, nieces and nephews, grandnieces and nephews, great-grandnieces and nephews, and members of his late wife’s family, Hughie and Margaret MacGregor, Robert and Marion MacGregor and Murray Clish and their families.
Lawrence was predeceased by his wife the former Margaret J. MacGregor;
brothers: James (Alice), Hattie (Christine), Grant (Anna Mae), Wallace; brothers-in-law Thomas Roy and Lloyd Campbell and sister-in-law Ellen Clish.
His remains will rest in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. from St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church with Rev. Barb Fotheringham officiating, assisted by Lawrence’s nephew Pastor Douglas Campbell. Burial will be in the Bridgeville Cemetery.
Family flowers only please. Donations in memory of Lawrence may be made to the Sadie and Archie Thompson Memorial Fund at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church.
The Odd Fellows Lodge will meet at the funeral home on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. to conduct their tribute service.
