Shirley was a highly respected citizen of Grand Falls-Windsor who dedicated countless years to community service. For many years she was a common sight in the neighbourhood canvassing door to door for every charity to such an extent that she was frequently greeted by neighbours with and exclamation of “what are you collecting for this time?”. Shirley also served on the executive of the Grand Falls Curling Club and as President of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion in Bishop Falls. By far her passion was for endeavours involving the youth of the community. She absolutely loved being a member of the Kiwanis Club of Grand Falls-Windsor, where she will be dearly missed. She served on several committees such as recruiting and organizing volunteers at venues and the Gordon Pinsent Centre for the Arts for the Kiwanis Music Festival. Since the passing of her husband in 2000, she served as the Army Cadet Liaison with the Kiwanis and was a permanent fixture at the Amouries on Sunday evenings. Special thanks to the physicians and nurses of the Health Sciences Centre, especially the nurses on the fifth floor who constructed her very own pole, complete with cups for tips. Visitation in St. John’s at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Wednesday March 6, 2013 from 4 - 9 p.m. and in Grand Falls-Windsor at Central Funeral Home, Union Street, on Friday March 8, 2013 from 2 - 4 & 7 - 9 p.m. Funeral service will be held from Holy Trinity Anglican Church, on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with interment to follow in the Multidenominational Cemetery, Grand Falls-Windsor. Flowers gratefully accepted but she would have really appreciated donations made to the Kiwanis for use by the 1916 Beaumont Hamel Army Cadet Corps or directly to the Corps itself.
