Sister Irene (Anne Regina) Poirier, 88, died at Parkstone Enhanced Care on March 4, 2013.
Born in Reserve Mines on Oct. 16, 1924, she was a daughter of Mose and Olive (Aucoin) Poirier. She entered the Sisters of Charity - Halifax on Feb. 2, 1947 and made her final profession on Aug. 15, 1955.
Sr. Irene spent her time in ministry from 1949 to 1979 as an educator, teaching mostly in Nova Scotia with the exception of eight years in Rego Park, New York. In most of these convents, she also acted as the local treasurer. In 1979 she retired to St. Joseph Convent in Halifax and ministered to the aged in Mother Berchman’s Infirmary at Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse until 1988. In 2004, she herself moved to the Motherhouse. In May of 2007, she was transferred to DePaul Hall at Parkstone Enhanced Care but changed to Caritas Residence when it was completed in 2008. However, in May of 2009 it was necessary for her to return to Parkstone Enhanced Care because of declining health.
Sister Irene is survived by her sisters, Cecilia McLean, Sydney; Beverly Melnick, Reserve Mines; by her nephew, Rev. John Melnick, Freeland, PA; by her nieces, Susan Edwards, Dartmouth, Mary Anne Baker, Dartmouth, Michelle MacFarlane, Dartmouth and several other nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Carmelita Lownds and Sr. Rose Olivia, Sister of Charity; by her brothers, Harry and Joseph.
The body will be in Caritas Residence with visitation from 3-7 p.m. on Thursday, March 7. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 8 at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Chapel of Caritas Residence. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, N.S.
