On Thursday, March 14, 2013, my beautiful wife, Shirley, left this world leaving behind a huge void in my life. I, Carlie, her husband, have lost my soulmate and the love of my life.
Born in New Waterford, Shirley was the daughter of the late Charles and Jennie (Nearing) McNeil.
Shirley was a faithful and devout member of the former St. Agnes Church, New Waterford.
She graduated in 1956 from St. Joseph's School of Nursing, Glace Bay. She was employed at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital for many years.
In her younger days, Shirley liked to knit and crochet. She had a strong will and was totally dedicated to the nursing profession. She was a beautiful wife and mother who loved her family dearly.
She is survived by her loving husband, Carlie; one daughter, Arlene (Joe); two sons, Darren (Jennifer), Glen (Charlene), all in New Waterford; one brother, Charles (Bernice), Victoria, B.C.; two sisters, Sharon Daye, RN, (Joe), Dominion, Carmel Chiasson, RN, Massachusetts; four grandchildren, Samantha, Kianna, Nikayla, Kyle and two step-granddaughters, Roberta and Stephenie.
Besides her parents, Shirley was predeceased by a sibling in infancy and a foster brother, Frank Bursey Sr.
Visitation will be held on Monday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. The funeral mass, officiated by Rev. Ray Huntley, is Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Leonard Church with burial to follow.
All are welcome to join the family for a reception in St. Leonard's hall, Convent Street.
As an expression of sympathy for Shirley, memorial donations in her memory may be made to the MS Society, VON, Cape Breton Search and Rescue or a charity of one's choice.
