PICTOU – John William Fraser, 97, of the Shiretown Nursing Home, Pictou, and formerly of Stellarton and Lower Mount Thom, passed away February 2, 2010 in the home.
Born in Lower Mount Thom, he was the son of the late Daniel R. and Lilla C. (Ross) Fraser.
A veteran of the Second World War, John served with the Pictou Highlanders in Canada, the Royal Canadian Engineers overseas in the Central Mediterranean, and in North West Europe with the Eighth Army. He worked as a farmer and road foreman before joining the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires until retirement. He was a member of St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church, Salt Springs, the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 16, Pictou, and the Eighth Army Veterans Association of Canada.
John is survived by his daughter, Sylvia Barkhouse, Pictou; nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, two great-great-granddaughters; sister, Jean Fraser, New Glasgow; daughter-in-law, Hazel Fraser, New Glasgow; and son-in-law, Jean Paul Theriault, New Glasgow.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Joanna (Forbes); second wife, Laura (MacKay); son, James; and daughter, Sheila.
Cremation has taken place. A public graveside service will be held at a later date in Gladstone Cemetery, Four Mile Brook.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Shiretown Nursing Home, or a charity of your choice.
