It is with great sorrow and sadness that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father and grandfather on March 16, 2013, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines, Billy was the son of the late Rod and Veronica (Blinkhorn) Gillis.
Dad was a coal miner his whole life and served on various union positions at both Princess and Prince collieries. He served many years as recording secretary and also local union president. He also served two terms as sub district board member. In his younger years, Dad was a well-known softball player in Sydney Mines.
Billy is survived by his loving wife, Kay (Waye) of 59 years; sons, Tommy (Judy), Billy (Barbara), Brian ‘Jake’ (Ellen), Robbie (Margarett); his daughters, Judy, at home, Susie (Dannie), Lori (Marc). ‘Poppy’ is also survived by his 13 grandchildren, whom he loved dearly, Tommy, Amanda, Leah, Billy, Matthew, Riley, Bretonnie, Tracey, Logan, Rebecca, Ty, Kyle, Landyn and his four great-grandchildren, Mya Adrianna, Kaci and Gavin. Billy is also survived by his brothers, Roddie, Bobby-Joe, Bernie; and his sisters, Vera MacGillvary, Aldrie LeBlanc and Belinda.
Besides his parents Billy was also predeceased by his brother, Lawrence.
At this time we would like to thank Dr. Michele McKeough, Dr. M. Naqvi and the staff of 4 West Northside General Hospital, and also a very special thank you to his daughter-in-law Barbara, we couldn’t have gotten through it without you.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines.
Visitation for the late William ‘Billy’ Gillis will be held Tuesday, March 19, 2013, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines. A celebration of his life will take place Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. Thomas John officiating. A reception will be held in the Centennial Room following the mass.
