NORTH SYDNEY – It is with sadness we the family announce the sudden passing of Andrew Martin MacDonald, age 93, longtime resident of North Sydney on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at his home.
Born in Westville, Martin was the youngest child of the late James and Mary (Hayman) MacDonald and the last surviving member of his immediate family.
After graduating from high school, he began training to be a nurse at the VG Hospital in Halifax, but left to join the Canadian Navy, serving overseas during the Second World War. After the war he studied Pharmacy at Dalhousie University in Halifax and worked in pharmacies in New Glasgow and Bedford before coming to North Sydney in 1960. He joined a partnership with Bill Johnson and to run the New Medical Hall until he retired in 1984. He was active in the Kiwanis Club and later became a member and former president, of the North Sydney Rotary Club and was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow.
He is survived by his daughter Gail (Eli) Drover, Sydney and his two grandchildren Joel and Nanci, his sister-in-law, Mary Miller, New Glasgow and many nieces and nephews.
Martin was predeceased by his wife Beryle (Miller) MacDonald, his daughter Nancy, sister Ella Whooten and brothers: Henry, Wilbur, Arthur and Cameron MacDonald.
There will be no visitation. A graveside committal for Martin will be held at a later date. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Rotary Crippled Children Fund.
