John Michael Serwatuk, 73, of Sydney, passed away on March 23, 2013, at the QE II Health Sciences Centre, Halifax.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Michael and Ketina (Fylypiw) Serwatuk.
John worked for CP Railroad in Ontario and then CNR in Sydney in both administration and the railroad yard. He was a member and volunteer at Holy Ghost Church, Whitney Pier. For over 40 years he was a member of the Ukrainian Men’s Club, where he served as past president. He loved fishing with good friends, Phil and Pat Devereaux and Gary Yurczyszyn at Lake Ainsley. He also enjoyed deep sea fishing with his brothers-in-law and spent many summer months in Point Aconi. He also enjoyed playing tarabish and hunting with Walter Furdus and friends.
In the earlier years of his marriage his family and friends spent their summers at his cottage on the Brick Yard Road. John enjoyed golfing at the Seaview Golf and Country Club and participated in the annual Jessome Masters.
John is survived by his loving wife, Theresa (Jessome); son, Paul Serwatuk, Grand Prairie, Alta.; sisters, Ann Zahrebelny, Pauline Cummings and Catherine Rose, all of Ontario; brothers, Walter (Stella), New Waterford, Tony (Diane) and Steve (Rosie), both of Ontario; sister-in-law, Joan Servatiak, Sydney; a number of nieces and nephews in Ontario and Point Aconi.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by brothers, Bill and Stanley in infancy.
Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Tuesday, March 26 at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, with panachyba at 7:30 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 27, at Holy Ghost Ukrainian Church, Whitney Pier. Rev. Roman Dusanowskyj will officiate. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Garden.
