John Reagh
REAGH, John Sponagle – 88, of Middleton, NS passed away peacefully Monday, March 18, 2013 in the Veteran’s Unit, Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Middleton, he was a son of the late John and Edith (Sponagle) Reagh. He attended Macdonald Consolidated School and later attended Mount Allison University completing his business course. John was a veteran of the Second World War having joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served his country overseas from 1942-1945. After the war, he returned home and joined the family business, G.N. Reagh & Sons Ltd. with his grandfather, father and uncle, and was later joined by his sons, Edward and George. He was also a founding partner of TRA Ltd, known locally as “Tingley Reagh and Adams”. He worked hard along with his family, was honest and loyal and his word was his bond. John had a passion for helping those less fortunate. He was a long time member of St. John’s United Church, Middleton having served on most committees and was a dedicated member of the Middleton Fire Department having served as Fire Chief from 1958-1968. John was a 65 year member and Past President of the Royal Canadian Legion, Middleton Branch No. 1and a long time blood donor having given well over 100 donations to help others. He loved all animals, but had a soft spot for his dogs which gave him great pleasure. He was often spotted walking to and from work or just around town with his loyal companions. John enjoyed being with family and friends at the summer cottages over the years at Shannon, Margaretsville and Trout Lake. He was a true gentleman and a friend; he had a great hand shake and a smile for all. He is survived by his daughters, Susan Reagh and Marilyn Reagh, both of Middleton; sons, Edward Reagh (Sondi Deglan), Port George and George (June) Reagh, Middleton; sister, Elizabeth “Beth” MacDonald, Toronto; grandchildren Shane, Lindsay, Tasha, Sarah, Matthew, Jon and Max; 4 great grandchildren; step brother, Stanley (Ann) Balch, Moncton; step sister-in-law, Pat Balch, Kentville and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his loving wife of 65 years, the former Doris Beals; cousin Gladys Reagh; step mother Viola and step-brother Robert Balch. Cremation has taken place. Visitation was held Thursday, March 21, 2013 in the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., (902) 825-3448 where a Legion Tribute conducted by Middleton Branch No. 1 was held. Private family graveside service will be held in Pine Grove Cemetery, Middleton. Donations in John’s memory may be made to the Middleton Fire Department & Community Centre Building Fund or to the charity of choice.
