We the family of the late Donnie Matheson would like to express our sincere thanks to friends and family- far and wide, of our late father, uncle, ‘gramps’ and brother. We saw a dramatic change in Dad in August of 2008 when his wife of 59 years died suddenly before him. Avice and Donnie are terribly missed by us all but we can take solace in knowing they are together again. Dad rallied for the last year after leaving his 8th Street apartment and his thoughtful neighbours; we thank those who visited Dad in hospital in both New Waterford and Glace Bay. We were touched by the out pouring of visits and numerous reflections of Dad’s outreach into the community during the days surrounding the funeral, especially recollections of his visits to the sick and shut-ins as an elder in the church. The professionalism of the family and staff of V.J. McGillivray’s was truly exceptional and heartfelt. Since September Dad was in the care of the staff at Celtic Court where they integrated him their caring environment- this made this often difficult transition easier for all- Thank you.

We cannot express the emotions felt during the funeral service at Calvin United Church; the addition of the Men of the Deeps to the Calvin Choir was moving- a fitting send off to an original member. Rev. Duncan Roach’s caring words during the funeral service were spoken from truths based upon a long friendship and Dad’s faith and devotion to the church. The range of emotions during the service was befitting our dad’s character and helped to release some of the emotions and pain of the loss.

To all those who called, sent notices, e-mails, dedications, donations to church and charity and dropped off food and refreshments, we thank you.
