
Donald Fownes
FOWNES, DONALD BLISS C.D. - It is with sadness the family announces the passing of Donald B. Fownes, C.D., at the age of 88 on Sunday, April 7, 2013 at The Moncton Hospital. Born in Moncton, he was the son of the late Alfred and Lillian (Smith) Fownes. Don enlisted in the RCAF in 1944 and was commissioned as a Bomb Aimer prior to the end of WWII. Following his return to civilian life in Moncton, he was employed for approximately 13 years as a draftsman with CNR before moving on with the Department of Transport (Air Services Division). After 7 years with DOT, Don commenced work as the Base Draftsman at Canadian Forces Base Moncton, where he remained until his retirement in 1979. Don had also served in the Militia and at the time of his retirement in 1965, had occupied the role of Quartermaster at # 5 Militia Group Headquarters. Don was a member of the Moncton Probus Club and a life member of St. John’s United Church. His detailed recollection of history and of his many travels were always welcomed stories for each and every one of his children and grandchildren. Don is survived by his life partner of 65 years, Phyllis (McWilliam) Fownes; three daughters, Peggy Bohus (Rick), Carol Anne Fownes and Alison Caissie, all of Moncton; six grandchildren, Aaron and Darcy Fraser of Halifax, Amber and Jesse Ritchie and Mitchell and Robyn Caissie, all of Moncton; his sister, Virginia Stewart of Saint John and his sister-in-law, Hazel Fownes (Trites) of Moncton. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Merlin Fownes.
Visitation at Ferguson Knowles Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995) on Wednesday from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. Funeral Service at St. John’s United Church, Alma Street, Moncton on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at 2:00 pm, with The Rev. Aaron Billard officiating. Reception following the service. Interment, St. Matthew’s United Church Cemetery, Clairville. In lieu of flowers, donations in Don’s memory may be made to St. John’s United Church or the Friends of The Moncton Hospital.
