Illa Mildred Mailman
Illa Mildred Mailman, 94, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 12, 2013 surrounded by her family after a short illness. Born in Oxford Junction, she was the daughter of the late Minor William and Lena Mae (Tait) Stone. During WWII, she was employed as a Blueprint Foreman at the Canada Car (Aircraft) Plant in Amherst.
Illa moved to Stellarton where she has resided since 1945. She was a hairdresser by trade, owning her own shop. She married on September 12, 1949 to John Henry Mailman. Illa was an active member of Christ Church, Stellarton, being involved in the ACW, the Dorcas group, and the Church Choir. She was a member of the Rebecca Lodge, first joining the Southern Cross No. 3, and then transferred to Golden Link No. 2. and is now a member of the Dorcas Lodge #42, Thorburn. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary for Scouting, and a long-term member of the Housewives Bowling League - Wednesday. She loved playing 45s and bridge, and was always delighted when she caught the good cards.
Illa is survived by her son, Fred (Sharon), Dartmouth, N.S., grandchildren, Jonathan (Emma), Vancouver, B.C., Elaine, Ottawa, O.N. and her brother Kenneth Stone, Riverview, N.B., various nieces and nephews, as well as great nieces and nephews. Illa was predeceased by husband John Henry, granddaughter Cheryl Elizabeth, brother Layton Stone, sisters Ethel Elmers, Leona MacDonald, and Olive Dill.
Visitation will take place at H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Home, 18 Acadia Avenue, Stellarton on Tuesday, April 16, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to be held at Christ Church, Stellarton on Wednesday, April 17, at 2:00 p.m. with Rev Aidan Kingsbury officiating, burial to follow in the church cemetery.
