Elaine Douthwright

Douthwright, Elaine, Truro. It is with sadness that we share the news of the passing of our mother, Edythe Elaine Douthwright, Cedarstone Enhanced Care. Mom passed away suddenly and peacefully with family by her side, Friday evening, April 12, 2013, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Emergency Department, Truro, NS. Born June 3, 1930, in Halifax NS, Mom was the eldest daughter of Hudson and Louise (Buck) Warnell and was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, our Dad, Cecil, in 2009.
Over the years Mom was passionately active in her community: including: the development of Butler Centre and McCully House for individuals with mental and physical challenges; the Boards of Directors for Butler Centre, CNIB and the Canadian Council for the Blind; assisting young people with vision impairments to secure meaningful work opportunities with local employers; participatedion in education programs in schools to introduce children to the wonderful possibilities of life with a visual impairment and was frequently accompanied by her guide dogs and best friends, Bo and Vesper; was active with the Girl Guides of Canada and the Canadian Cancer Society's Annual Daffodil Campaign. Mom was a fifty year member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority which she enjoyed so very much, and was active in her church until recent years.
Mom will be proudly and fondly remembered by daughters: Theresa (Les) Fillatre, Susan (Mel) Kaulback, all of Dartmouth; Sheila Douthwright (Darrell Toole), Abu Dhabi, UAE; Marilyn (Brian) MacKay, Upper Stewiacke; grandchildren, Leah Fillatre, Dartmouth; Kristen (Ashantha) Ranasinghe, Winnipeg; Darren Kaulback, Eastern Passage; Jason Kaulback, St John NB; Lisa and Laura Toole, Dartmouth; Marcus MacKay, Upper Stewiacke; great granddaughter, Lindsay Kaulback, Halifax; sisters-in-law Verna Curtin, Lindsay ON and Joyce Douthwright, Hantsport NS. Mom was so very proud of the “people” her daughters, grandchildren and great granddaughter grew to be. Mom was the last surviving member of her family, predeceased by her parents Hudson and Louise; sisters Gladys and Sharon, and brother Albert.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff , residents and volunteers of Victoria Way, Cedarstone Enhanced Care for their friendships and genuine care of Mom over the past two and half years. Cedarstone became her home and allowed her to continue her independence in a safe place, to enjoy outings with her Sorority Sisters, visits with her many friends; long chats on the phone and to continue her passion for knitting afghans for the local palliative care program and fund raisers. She will be fondly remembered.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street. Truro, where Elaine’s family will receive friends from 7-9 pm on Wednesday and where Beta Sigma Phi Sorority will conduct a private In Memoriam Ritual with family in the funeral home.
