It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Harry Allan Huntington, who died at the age of 88, on Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at his home in Huntington.
Born Nov. 25, 1924, and a native of Huntington, he was the son of Frederick Allan ‘Allie’ and Rebecca Huntington.
He was the beloved husband of Wilma (Stevenson) Huntington. Harry leaves behind sons, Russell (Pearl), Marion Bridge, N.S., David (Anne Marie), Memramcook, N.B., Ken (Kathy), Dartmouth, N.S.; daughters, Hazel (Paul McPhee), Aurora, Ont., Kathy (Robert Bell), Marion Bridge, N.S.; daughter-in-law, Elaine Huntington; his 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, all loved him dearly and will cherish fond memories.
He was predeceased by the mother of his children, Karen (Mikkelsen) Huntington and his son, Gordon Huntington.
He will be greatly missed by sister and brother-in-law, Ronalda and Allison Woodworth, Berwick, N.S.; sisters-in-law, Irene MacDonald, Sydney, and Eunice Stevenson, Brush Prairie, Washington, USA; a special nephew, Travis MacDonald and many dear nieces and nephews. He will be missed by his close circle of friends who visited with him regularly.
Harry lived a very full life and made every day count. During his lifetime he reached out to the community. He wanted to make a difference and he did.
A natural leader, innovator and entrepreneur, he started many initiatives in Marion Bridge, and as far away as Panama. He was an employer, bringing industry to the community as a farmer, operating the country store on the Huntington property, building the Marion Bridge Shopping Centre and gas station, establishing MB Pulp and MB Enterprises. He was the first pulp producer in Cape Breton.
He was very active in the community over the years with such things as the Marion Bridge volunteer department, Marion Bridge Recreation Centre, the Mira Gala, producing maple syrup, Mira Pasture Co-Op, running sleigh rides at the Mira Pasture where he served his homemade fish cakes, beans and corn and clam chowder, and a member of CBRM Property Tax Association for fair property tax.
An author, he wrote the story of his life and provided a lot of insight into our local history. It is fair to say that he was an icon in our community and will be long remembered. He was always interested in others and had many friends. He loved to visit with friends and neighbours. Even in his last few days he entertained close friends who dropped by. There was always a cup of tea and a little something to eat.
Visitation will be held at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney on Friday, April 19, 2013, from 7-9 p.m. and Saturday, April 20, 2013, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will take place 2 p.m., Sunday, April 21, 2013, in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Nancy Whitney officiating. Reception to follow. Interment to take place in Huntington Cemetery.
