Thomas 'Tom' Wilcox
Lieu de naissance : Louisbourg
Date de décès : 24 avril 2013
It is with sadness that the family of Thomas Arthur Wilcox, 85, of Glace Bay announces his passing on April 24, 2013, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Louisbourg, he was the son of the late George and Lillian (Tutty) Wilcox.
Tom spent most of his working years on the sea fishing his pride and joy, the “Alice & Rita.” After selling his boat in 1979, he continued to fish a variety of boats out of Glace Bay and Hubbards.
He was a volunteer member of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary Maritimes and received a certificate for 20 years of voluntary search and rescue service.
Tom retired from the sea when his wife, Alice became ill so that he could be close to home and her. Although retired from the sea, he spent time down around the wharf and “the bank,” keeping up to date on the latest fishing stories. Tom could always be found in his yard, taking care of his lawn, growing tomatoes and chatting with the neighbours. He took pride in having the greenest lawn and enjoyed getting compliments about it and giving advice on how to do it. Over the years as his mobility declined, he could be found out and about on his scooter.
Tom will be forever missed by his children, Rita (Sandy) Stevens, Bedford, N.S.; John (Pat), Glace Bay; Keith (Anne), Glace Bay; Shauna, Glace Bay; and daughter-in-law, Belinda Wilcox, Glace Bay; grandchildren, Terry (Nicole), Sherisse (Alan) Billard, Amy (Colleen), Chad (Terra) McNeil, Mark (Courtney) McNeil, Matthew (Candace), Jennifer (Stephen) Kelloway, Brittany and Kendra. He is also survived by great-grandchildren, Emilie, Hannah, Zachary, Katie, Jackson, Alison, William, Shyanne, Peyton and Nathan. Tom will also be missed by his sister, Caroline ‘Carrie’ Croucher, Porter’s Lake; sisters-in-law, Marie White, Eileen Boutilier, Theresa MacDonald, Susan MacDonald, Rita Bates, Iris Bates, Wilhamenia Bates and by many nieces, nephews and friends.
Besides his parents, Tom has gone to heaven to reunite with his loving wife of 47 years, Alice (Bates), son, Tommy, brothers, Georgie and John, sisters-in-law, Frances Wilcox, Helen Bates, brothers-in-law, Lorne Croucher, Ferdie White, Jim, Alex, Dave, John and Herman Bates, Sonny Boutilier, Lloyd MacDonald and Wilfred MacDonald.
Visitation will take place Saturday April 27, 7-9 p.m. and Sunday, April 28, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, April 29, 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Church with Rev. Norman McPhee officiating. Reception will follow in the church hall.
