Dan died peacefully of cancer on May 7, 2013 at the An Cala unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, with his family at his side.
Born in St. Catharines, Ontario on January 22,1930, he was the son of the late Abram and Dorothy Harris.
He leaves to grieve, Diane, his wife of 54 years. He also leaves his two sons and their families-Dan J. (Skip), his wife Anita and their two children, Michelle and Daniel all of Sydney, Rob, his wife Ruth and their two children Jamie and Matt, all of Calgary. Dan is also survived by two sisters- Lois (the late Jim) Latham ,Gabarus and Joyce (the late Tom) Wilcox ,Niagara Falls, Ont., and their families.
At a very young age, Dan moved with his family from St. Catharines to Louisbourg. In his late teens, the family moved in to Sydney. Then in his twenties, the family moved back to St. Catharines. It was there that he met and married Diane, and where their two sons were born. In the mid sixties, a job opportunity became available in Cork, Ireland. He and the family lived there for a year and a half. From there, they returned to New York State where the family resided for three years. Finally, in 1971, he returned to Sydney to settle down. He fulfilled a life-long ambition and opened his own business-Minute Muffler (Merit Muffler Ltd.). At the age of 60 he retired and then fulfilled another ambition. He learned to build wooden boats-some large and some models.
He spent 12 happy years living in Gabarus-boating, fishing, riding his A.T.V and building more boats.
Visitation will take place Friday May 10, 2013 at Sydney Memorial Chapel from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
A family burial will take place at a later date.
No flowers please. If so desired, memorial donations may be made to Hospice/Palliative Care at the C.B. Regional Hospital.
