Alex Wujcik, 86, of Glace Bay, passed away on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, Alex was the son of the late Joseph and Caroline (Samiek) Wujcik of Poland.
Alex had a strong Catholic faith and was a devoted member of Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay. He was a member of the Cursillo movement and the Knights of Columbus.
Alex worked as a coal miner in Caledonia, No. 26, Prince and Phalen Mine; accumulating 44 years of service.
He loved sports and was an avid swimmer and skater. He coached baseball and hockey teams and also enjoyed playing tennis.
Alex will be remembered as a kind, quiet and gentle man.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Alex is survived by his three daughters, Jocelyn Wujcik, Caroline ‘Tasha’ MacQueen (George), Trina Gouthro (Liam), all in Glace Bay; two sons, Brian (Linda), Ontario, Glayan (Denise), Glace Bay; eight grandchildren, Alanna (Michael) Bresson, Curtis MacQueen, Scott Wujcik, Andrew, Jeffery Wujcik, Maggie, Michael, William Gouthro; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Alex was predeceased by his wife, Margaret ‘Peggy’ MacDonald, two sisters, Jenny Delong, Helen Wadden and a daughter-in-law, Barbara Wujcik.
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass, officiated by Rev. Norman MacPhee, is Friday, 10 a.m. in Holy Cross Church followed by a reception in the church hall. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens after the reception.
As an expression of sympathy for Alex, memorial donations in his memory may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart & Stroke Foundation or a charity of one’s choice.
