It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Donald Burke, 63, of Glace Bay.
Donnie passed away Thursday, May 9, 2013, at the Glace Bay Hospital.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late John and Mabel ‘Lovey’ Burke.
He was a member of Holy Cross parish. Donnie was an active member of Branch 3 Royal Canadian Legion.
Following his retirement after 25 years at Devco in the central machine shop where he worked as an electrician, Donnie was employed at Branch 3 as a handyman and bartender in the past 10 years.
He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His greatest joy was his family.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Deborah (Aucoin) who was the love of his life; daughter, Tanya (Roy MacMillan), Donkin; son, Donald (Leah Serna), Toronto, Ont.; grandchildren, Taylor (Tyler), Nathan and Frankie MacMillan, who he loved and cherished more then anything in the world.
Donnie’s hobbies were many. If he wasn’t found at the ball field or hockey rink following his children and grandchildren, you would find him working tirelessly on his garden or spending time woodworking or he would be out for rides on his motorcycle.
Also surviving are sisters, Mary, Glace Bay, Georgie MacDonald (Calder), Glace Bay, Andrea Nandlal, Ontario; and sister-in-law, Josephine ‘Beanie’ Burke, Ontario; brothers, John (Sharlene), Ottawa, Jim (Janet), Glace Bay, and Gary, Glace Bay; many nieces and nephews; and countless close friends.
Besides his parents, Donnie was predeceased by his mother and father-in-law, Laurence and Mary Aucoin, sister, Teresa, brothers, Daniel ‘Dodie’ and William.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 14, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J.McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 15 at Holy Cross parish with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. A luncheon will follow in the parish hall. Interment will take place at a later date.
